How Often Should You Shave Your Head?

There is no specific frequency at which you can shave your head. It depends on each person’s needs.

  • Normally, you can shave your head every 2 to 3 days.
  • If you want to maintain a smooth appearance, you can also choose to shave your head every single day.
  • But if you shave your head bald, you are likely to cut yourself more frequently. It is, however, more susceptible to razor burns and bumps. At this stage, you must give your head enough time to recover to allow your scalp to heal.

Factors that Affect Your Decision

While we recommend shaving your head after every 2 to 3 days. The frequency can vary from one person to another depending on the following factors:

Desired smoothness

Men who crave an ultra-smooth shave are usually bald. Not to mention that some men cannot survive without that ultra-smooth feeling. If you are one of such men, then consider shaving daily to achieve your desired feeling and look.

There is also another category of men who would prefer their hair to grow a little bit before shaving again. With time, you will discover your ideal level of smoothness as you master the art of shaving.

Time for Shaving

Shaving your head can be time-consuming because your scalp has a large surface area to cover. It is also difficult to effectively visualize how you want your head to look after a shave.

Men with a busy work schedule may not have enough time for head shaving. You may have to allow for stubble to grow for a couple of days before you can get time to shave. This means you may only be able to shave 3 to 4 days a week.

In addition, you need to consider the type of razor you use. Straight razors and shavettes will require more time to perfect than cartridge razors

Hair Growth Rate

The rate of hair regrowth can vary widely among men. You should know how fast your hair grows back after 2 to 3 shaves.

Some men can maintain a smooth appearance for about 3 to 4 days after shaving. Others may have shaved today but tomorrow looks like a few days have passed.

You can rely on the rate of beard growth to consider the speed of hair growth. However, this is only an estimate as there will still be exceptions.

To maintain smoothness, you can shave every day. After the first few shaves, you’ll definitely be able to come up with your own shaving cycle.

Skin Sensitivity

As much as you desire a smooth, slick shaved head, you must consider the health of your skin.

Can your skin take on the blade on a daily basis without experiencing nicks, cuts, bumps, itching, or redness? Sensitive skin will not be able to survive the abuse. So, instead of shaving daily or after every two to three days, you can consider giving your head a few more days to rest. For sensitive skin, you can consider shaving after every five to six days.

Some people have fast-growing hair and some have slow-growing hair. Sometimes there is nothing you can do but wait for your hair to grow or keep cutting it at a quicker rate (daily). Texture, growth, and even baldness normally come from the mother’s side of the family.

How to Shave Your Head

There are several methods of shaving your head (like shaving with electric clippers, single blade razor, or multiple blade razor), but the simplest and cleanest is the method of shaving with a multiple blade razor.

What You Will Need

You will need a shaving brush, pre-shave oil, shaving cream, a multiple blade razor, and a mirror.

Step 1: Prep Your Skin

Take a hot shower

Apply a hot towel on your head to open up the pores and soften the skin. This helps the blade glide smoothly.

Alternatively, you can take a long hot shower to open up the pores and the skin. Gently massage pre-shave oil onto your head. This step is important if you want to experience the best shave.

Step 2: Brush Your Head

Can I use a shaving brush on my head? Yes! The same principle you use on your face applies to your head. The bristles of the shaving brush will lift your hair off the skin.

Step 3: Lather Up

Starting at your temple, move your shaving brush in small circles. This will help create a rich, thick lather that will end up feeling like a rich cream.

Start 4: Start Shaving

Use a light hand, starting at the top of your head. Slowly shave with the grain and not against the grain.

Avoid applying too much pressure on the blade, keep it light and easy. Your bathroom and hand mirror will come in handy when you want to shave the back of your head.

Step 5: Soothe Your Skin

Rinse and dry your head with your pre-shave oil as your moisturizer. This will add a little bit of sheen as well as soften the skin for superior comfort.

How often should you shave your head? After two to three days, that’s our recommendation.

But we all have different rates of hair growth depending on our genetic makeup, skin sensitivity, preference, and convenience.

Shaving more frequently may not be a very good idea if you have sensitive skin that cannot withstand repeated cuts and nicks.
